Now you’ve got your playoff hockey pool set up, it’s time to
make sure you don’t miss a game when you’re away from home or you can’t make it
to your favourite sports bar.
CBC’s Hockey app was updated this week so road warriors
don’t have to miss a game. And if you’re planning to travel outside of Canada,
SlingboxViewer is another option for keeping up with the Canucks or whatever
team is your favourite in the playoffs.
UPDATE: Rogers has updated its Rogers Live app to
include CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada livestreamed games but only for
smartphones.
iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, app is free, $9.99 for playoffs
live bundle
The app is free but if you want to see the games
livestreamed to your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, you have to buy the games. The
in-app purchase include the playoffs-live bundle at $9.99 and the highlights
bundle, giving you access to live replays throughout the playoffs, at $5.99.
You can also buy single games for $2.99. Along with the games, the app also
delivers live box scores, stats and results, news updates, playoff schedules,
injury reports, blogs and other Hockey Night in Canada content. You can also
watch CBC hockey through a web browser on your computer, but note that the
games are only available for viewing if you’re in Canada. It’s the same for the
app.
Dan Tavares, executive producer at CBC Sports, said an
Android app is planned. “I just don’t know if it will get released in time.”
This was my go-to app when I was travelling during last
year’s playoffs and while the $29.99 price tag may seem steep, it paled compared
to our group’s bill at the Great Canadian Pub in Paris, the only place in that
city airing the Canucks games. You must also have a SlingBox hooked up to your
home TV, adding another $190 to your playoff bill for the Solo version and $270
for the Pro HD model. But hey, this is the playoffs.
